What Accommodation Options Are Available for Those Advancing in Age?

About Me
Making The Most Of Assisted Living

When my nana had to move into a nursing home, she was a bit grumpy as she has always been incredibly independent. However, I spent a lot of time helping her get used to the benefits of living in the home, and within weeks she remarked that she was having the time of her life. I started this blog because I want to help other people whose grandparents or parents need to move out of the family home. From getting involved in activities to making the room resemble their old home, there are so many ways where assisted living facilities are beneficial, you just need to know how to find the positives.

What Accommodation Options Are Available for Those Advancing in Age?

More people than ever are living alone these days, and while this is sometimes a matter of choice, it may also be the result of separation or bereavement. Either way, these individuals often have to make some key decisions with their living arrangements in mind as they get older.

If you're facing such a choice yourself, what options are available in your area and what should you consider as you weigh each option up?

Initial Analysis

To begin with, much will depend on your health and levels of mobility and whether or not you are able to rely on other members of the family to provide support.

Granny Flat

For example, some people may be able to move in with their children and occupy what is known as a granny flat, but others would rather not impose on their kids or may find that this is not an option.

Sheltered Accommodation

If you are having some issues with your health but are generally able to look after yourself, then you may opt to live in sheltered accommodation. These are basically self-contained houses or flats that have a manager on site who is able to respond to any emergency situation as needed. These facilities may also be equipped with an alarm system that can be easily activated and can bring support around the clock.

Retirement Village

Those who would like to lead a more active lifestyle but still have the support available as needed could always think about living in a retirement village. These are becoming more popular as time goes by and they may contain 30 or more individual units centred around a clubhouse or other facility. They may also have swimming pools, tennis courts and even a golf course, and this would be an opportunity to interact with other like-minded and active individuals as well.

Care Home

Of course, some people are unfortunate to suffer from a debilitating illness and may have issues with their mobility. In this case, they can consider living in a care home that is set up to deal with such issues. Typically, they will have a private room within that facility and can also utilise a central living room and dining room. Trained staff will be on hand to help them deal with everyday issues.
